"The Last Samurai" illustrates how men have endured, perhaps too eagerly, untenable sacrifices in the name of modernization. This epic tale begins with Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), accepting a lucrative offer to train the Meiji Emperor's army in order to suppress the last remaining samurai in Japan. A troubled alcoholic, Algren is tormented with his own gruelling past as a civil war hero, which forced him to slaughter countless Native Americans.
When the still unprepared army takes on samurai led by Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe), Algren is taken hostage and brought to the warlord's village. There he begins a journey of redemption, learning the sacred code of dignity, honour and humility of the samurai. Cared for by the recently widowed Taka (Koyuki) and guided by the charismatic Katsumoto, Algren is returned safely to the military, where he is faced with the ultimate decision as he stands witness to the downfall of the last samurai.
By incorporating revered Japanese actors, language training, and authentic costumes, Hollywood has surprisingly proven itself capable of producing a film without the colonialist stench of the "civilized" versus the "savage." Rather, the film presents a plot prevalent to all mankind, illustrating the complexity of history while preserving the authenticity of an exotic land.
It also includes a powerful performance of Watanabe, who regularly upstages the largerthan-life Cruise. Excellent cinematography captures a zen-like serenity alongside breathtakingly ferocious battle scenes. The ending could have been a little more believable, perhaps pointing to the recklessness of the emperor's army leading to the World Wars after the events that inspired the film. But director Edward Zwick has undoubtedly produced something of class here.
